San Antonio Missions

Named a World Heritage site in July 2015, the San Antonio Missions are located just south of downtown San Antonio. You and your family will have the chance to see the very first beginnings of the Alamo as your walk, or bike, through the historic Mission parks. The San Antonio Missions tell the stories of the people who came into the Spanish missions to live in the 1700s. Acculturating and converting the indigenous population in order to become Spanish citizens reverberates today in the southwest United States. Our history is part of who we were, who we are, and who we will be. The National Park Service invites you to discover American history in all its diversity at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

The coolest part about the access to these world heritage sites, is the fact that you can walk from the River Walk area of downtown San Antonio all the way through many of the mission parks. Considering Mokara Hotel & Spa’s historical authenticity to the City of San Antonio, you will want to visit these missions to help tie your experience together. Bike routes, walking trails, and more information can also be given to you by the Front Desk or Concierge team. Along the trails you’ll even see people kayaking through the San Antonio river, which later reaches up to the River Walk right outside our hotel! 

Things to Know Before You Visit the Missions

• Climate: Spring, summer, and fall are all hot and humid. Winters are moderate. Layers of clothing are recommended for winter. Rainfall is fairly hit and miss, and rarely falls for more than an hour at a time. Do not drive through moving water.
• Each of the four churches are active parishes, and therefore may be temporarily closed for Mass, weddings, or funerals. Please be respectful and refrain from entering the churches during these periods.
• Depending on your interests, allow up to four hours to visit the park's four missions.
• While staying at Mokara Hotel & Spa, in order to get a great historical experience, you will also want to take the complimentary property history tour to really tie in all of your historical experiences. This history tour will give you brief understanding of all things related to Mokara and what things were like in San Antonio when the building was first built.
