University of Virginia

University of Virginia campus

As soon as Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1825 and chose Charlottesville as its home, the city was forever changed. The city has expanded and changed throughout time, but one thing has remained the same, the fact that Charlottesville lives and breathes according to the University's schedule. There is nothing quite like the buzz of excitement in the air on a big game day or the quiet blissfulness of summertime when all the students have gone home. The University offers not only a way of life for Charlottesville residents, but also loads of intriguing history to learn and beautiful architecture to see.

Whether you are visiting with someone who hopes to be a future Cavalier or have long since graduated, a trip to Charlottesville isn't complete without relishing in the unforgettable sites that UVA provides. The Rotunda, which stands in the center of the campus, is hands down one of the most treasured sites of the city.

Things to Know Before You Go to UVA

  • Parking can be hard to find around the University area, but there is a free trolley that you can take throughout most of Charlottesville.
  • There are several restaurants and small boutique stores on "The Corner" of the University's Lawn, which is where the Rotunda is located.
  • Student-led historical tours are offered every day during the academic school year (except home football game days) with no reservations required. These tours meet at the Harrison Institute/Small Special Collections Library.
