Faneuil Hall Marketplace / Quincy Market

Faneuil Hall

Located in downtown Boston, Faneuil Hall Marketplace offers a variety of shopping, delicious cuisine, and the Quincy Market Colonnade. The cobblestone streets are busy with music, street performers and entertainment. This area has been used for centuries by Bostonians for various events and causes:

  • In 1742 Peter Faneuil, Boston's wealthiest merchant, built Faneuil Hall as a gift to the city. It became home to merchants, fishermen, and meat and produce sellers, and provided a platform for the country's most famous orators.
  • It is where colonists first protested the Sugar Act in 1764 and established the doctrine of "no taxation without representation."
  • George Washington toasted the nation there on its first birthday.
  • The building is nicknamed the Cradle of Liberty\ because pre-Revolutionary war meetings were held in its second floor meeting rooms.
