Omni William Penn Hotel Pays Homage to One Hundred Years of Hospitality
Pittsburgh, PA. Jan. 19, 2016 — In 1916, guests checking into the Omni William Penn Hotel for the first time marveled at the lavish Palm Court Lobby. One hundred years later, the exquisite lobby is still the omnipotent hub of business meetings, reacquainting coffee dates, and even the location responsible for forming Variety, The Children’s Charity. And that is simply the entrance.
With almost 600 glorious rooms, 52,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, including a 1920’s Speakeasy and more, the Omni William Penn Hotel has become a Pittsburgh landmark better known as the “Grande Dame.”
This seasoned facility has accommodated everything from grandiose wedding receptions and proposals, like the rumored Bob Hope proposal, to hosting A-list celebrities and entertainers, such as Lawrence Welk, which led to the now famous Lawrence Welk bubble machine innovated by the staff. Plus, United States Presidents, like John F. Kennedy, stayed at the Omni William Penn Hotel when visiting Pittsburgh.
To celebrate the hotel’s historical centennial, the Omni William Penn Hotel will host three commemorative events starting with its date of inception, March 9. That Wednesday, an extravagant birthday cake will be on display in the lobby, and guests and visitors are encouraged to purchase a birthday candle for $1 to decorate the cake, with all proceeds going to Variety.
On Thursday, March 10, guests are invited to end their day in grand style and attend a fashion show in the lobby featuring today’s chic trends, reminiscent of days of old.
And to savor the celebration, Friday, March 11 will showcase the Terrace Room where an array of classic entrees of the decades will be offered, accompanied by songs of the big band era, indicative of a specific epoch in Omni William Penn Hotel history.
As stated in the hotel’s history booklet, A Grande Dame Named William Penn, “while all hotels are interesting places, a grand hotel is a collection of lore and legend.” Take part in the celebration and send personal photos and anecdotes of the Omni William Penn Hotel to #williampenncentennial or
