The Tree Lighting
The centerpiece of The Omni Homestead Resort’s holiday season, the Great Hall tree stands in the foyer from the week of Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. This year’s tree is a Fraser fir, a native species of the southern Allegheny Mountains. In recent years, this tree has become the most popular type of Christmas tree sold in North America due to its rounded needles and rich blue and silver coloring. Sensitive to elevation, Fraser firs are grown on plantations at over 3,000 feet above sea level.
Our tree was planted in 1991 on a farm in Avery County, North Carolina. A Fraser fir can grow as much as 18 inches per season and as tall as 80 feet in its life span. At the time of selection, the Great Hall tree was over 23 feet tall with a spread of 15 feet. Every year there is the question if it will fit through the four-foot-wide door. Even though there might be a healthy fight from the tree, our team will not disappoint. Once inside, the tree is hoisted, straightened and supported before our team of decorators prepare the tree to be lit by a special guest on Wednesday. Join us and be a part of our 100+ year tradition.
